The ‘European Junior Winter Cups’, as they were originally known, was launched in 1977, with the aim of providing an opportunity for Europe’s top junior players to play a team event under indoor conditions during the winter months. The event was first held for both boys and girls at Under 18 and Under 16 age levels. In 1981 the Under 14 category was added to the competition, while the Under 18 category was abolished in 1989.
The name of the competition has undergone various changes throughout its long history, and the event is now known as the ‘Tennis Europe Winter Cups by HEAD’, acknowledging the role of the organisation’s ‘Official Racquet, Bag and Ball Partner’ in supporting the event.
In this year’s edition Malta is being represented by Matthew Griscti and Alex Degabriele who are two of Malta’s brightest prospects.
