Historic Result – Malta beats Spain in European Junior Championships – Updated Parl. Sec. sends best wishes

    Helene Pellicano and Francesca Curmi representing Malta won today’s encounter against Spain’s Gemma Lairon Navarro and Martinez Cirez in the doubles event with a 6-4 6-3 straight sets win in the Under 16 European Junior Championships, a tournament where all European countries send their top 2 tennis players in the respective age category. The event is the most popular and prestigious on the calendar for players and national federations alike. Ten former world #1s feature amongst the previous champions of the competition. It’s a great feat for Maltese Tennis and shows the progress of these two budding tennis players.

    In the singles event both Helene and Francesca have today also advanced to the third round. Helene beat Maja Makoric from Slovenia 7-5 6-1 and Francesca beat Emily Meyer from Austria 6-2 6-2.

    The Malta Tennis Federation is proud of  Helene Pellicano and Francesca Curmi representing Malta.

    The Parliamentary Secretary, the Hon. Dr Clifton Grima has sent his best wishes following this result and had the following words of praise – ‘Speaking on behalf of the Maltese public, we are proud of this prestigious result, a result that respects years of training and sacrifices.
