The first edition of the Birkirkara Doubles Open came to a thrilling conclusion yesterday with the highly anticipated men’s doubles final between the experienced duo of Hegoi Jauregui/Bas de Laat and the formidable Mark Gatt/Nicholas Degaetano.

The match started off with Jauregui and de Laat taking control of the proceedings, winning the first set comfortably 6-1. However, Gatt and Degaetano were determined to put up a fight, and they came out strong in the second set, which turned out to be a closely contested affair. Despite their best efforts, Jauregui and de Laat couldn’t hold on to their lead, and the second set ended in favor of Gatt and Degaetano, 6-2.

The match then went into a tiebreaker, which saw both teams play their hearts out, exchanging powerful shots and displaying great athleticism. However, in the end, it was Jauregui and de Laat who managed to come out on top, winning the tiebreaker 10-3 and clinching the victory.

The match was officiated by Luciene Bellizzi as the referee, Stephen Caruana as the umpire, and line judges Kevin and Gavin. We’d also like to extend our thanks to the sponsors from Olska Natural Premium Cider for their support of the club.

Congratulations to Hegoi Jauregui and Bas de Laat on being crowned the first Birkirkara Men’s Doubles Open champions!
