Carol Daughter of Vincent Curmi, a former Malta Champion, received her first tennis racket at the tender age of 4. Her impressive world junior ranking, which put her among the top 100, led to her being offered a full-ride scholarship at San Diego’s United States International University where she competed in the American college tennis circuit.
Carol dominated the junior circuit, becoming the national champion in under 12, 14, 16, and 18 categories, and went on to win the Malta National Championship between 1985 and 1995 with the exception of one year.
Carol, forming a formidable partnership with Helen Asciak won gold at the GSSE in 1987, 1989, 1991, and 1993. Additionally, Carol had her share of success in the Singles event, winning three bronze medals and a silver during the Games. Her performance in 1993, when the Games were held in Malta, saw her reach the final where she lost against the top player from Monaco.
1987 was a particularly special year for Carol as she was finally chosen as Sportswoman of the Year. Six years later, she received the National Qadi Tar-Republika award from the President of Malta, Dr. Censu Tabone. Carol represented Malta in the Federation Cup in 1986 and played 39 ties, winning 27 matches and losing 36.
