The Malta Tennis Federation is saddened by the demise of Judge Emeritus Lino Farrugia Sacco, a former President of this Federation. He is the father of the current standing President of the Federation, Dr David Farrugia Sacco. The rest of the Executive of the Federation, together with its governing Counsel offers its condolences to the President and Farrugia Sacco family for their loss.
During his tenure as President of the Federation, Lino brought about many changes to the association, growing its tennis club affiliation to the numbers that we are accustomed to today. He set standards for tennis administration through many of his interventions in developing the Federation’s statute reflecting good governance and organisation. His dream was that of the Federation having its own National Tennis Centre, a dream which has been followed up on by subsequent Presidents and executive. This is being brought to reality today. Lino was also honoured to be given life Honorary President of the Federation.
In leading Maltese tennis to the international stage he also served as Treasurer of the European Tennis Association (Tennis Europe) and Chairman of the Men’s Committee of the same Association.
In 2007 he was honoured by Tennis Europe at the annual general meeting held in Vienna with an award for Long and Outstanding contribution to the game of Tennis.
He also served as President of the Maltese Olympic Committee, a post he held between 1996 and 2013. He was also Chairman of the Audit Committee of the European Olympic Committee, Executive Board Member of the Mediterranean Games, and Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the Anti-Doping Commission of the Mediterranean Games. He was also an Arbitrator of the Court of Arbitration of Sports – Lausanne.
