After last week’s historic feat, where local teenage sensation Francesca Curmi won a first-ever singles professional tennis event, Francesca continued her impressive form by reaching another ITF final. This event was also being played in Montasir, Tunisia. Francesca had a tough route to reach the final as she had to beat WTA no. 354 and the tournament’s top seed, E. Guerrero Alvarez of Spain in the quarter final. In today’s final Francesca was up against the up and coming strong Japanese player, Sayaka Ishii. Francesca started confidently and won the first set quite convincingly, 6-2.
Sayaka improved a lot in the second set and all the games were evenly contested. The Japanese prevailed and won the second set 6-4 to take the match to the third deciding set. Francesca was more composed and her recent achievements undoubtedly contributed to her being the more consistent of the two. After a balanced start to the set Francesca showed all her class and aggressiveness to win the decider 7-5 to clinch her second title in 2 memorable weeks. A big well done to a remarkable athlete!
