The 2023 Marsa Open, the first open tennis tournament of the year, came to a close today with a thrilling day of tennis that saw Emma Montebello, Matthew Asciak, and the doubles team of Matthew Asciak and Dwayne Pullicino crowned champions in their respective categories.

The first match of the day was the Ladies Singles final, which saw top seed Emma Montebello go head-to-head with Emma-Lynn Mifsud. Montebello dominated the match, winning 6-1, 6-0 to take home the championship title.

In the highly anticipated men’s singles final, defending champion Matthew Asciak faced off against Liam Delicata. In the opening game, after a strong start, Delicata took an early lead. However, Asciak quickly found his form and began to pull ahead. The match saw some closely contested games, but ultimately, Asciak’s greater experience prevailed, and he secured the win with a final score of 6-1, 6-1. With this win, Asciak retains his number one position in the national rankings.

In the doubles final, Matthew Asciak and Dwayne Pullicino faced off against Marcus and Liam Delicata. Asciak and Pullicino started strong, taking the first set 6-1. However, Marcus and Liam Delicata didn’t give up and put up a good fight in the second set. Despite their efforts, Asciak and Pullicino managed to pull ahead and win the second set 6-4. The match was exciting and filled with great rallies, with both teams displaying impressive skill and teamwork. In the end, it was Asciak and Pullicino who emerged victorious, claiming the doubles title at the Marsa Open.

Following the matches, an award presentation was held to recognize the winners and runners-up, as well as to thank the sponsors and organizers. The presentation was attended by the chairman of the Marsa Sports Club, Anthony Mifsud, who congratulated the winners and finalists and thanked the organizers, officiating team, and all the players for their participation in making the tournament a success.

The Malta Tennis Federation Deputy President, Mark Camilleri, was also present at the ceremony and addressed the crowd. He expressed his gratitude to the sponsors, MAPFRE MSV Life, and thanked the Marsa Sports Club for their support in making the tournament a success.

The MTF would also like to thank the tournament director, Jevon Dimech, as well as Sean Grech for organizing the young ball retrievers during the event.
